Most modern laptops run at 15W TDP for the CPU/GPU package, with whole-system draw typically running around 20-25W when the CPU is saturated. Whole-system power draw on the Pi 400 in my testing is 2.7W-2.9W at desktop idle under Ubuntu 20.10 while running stress-ng it runs around 5.7W for the most part, with short peaks now and again as high as 6.5W. Less power, probably, in most cases-but "an order of magnitude less" is a bit overstated. Given that this thing will use an order of magnitude less Wh than even a modest laptop What the heck, I'll buy a couple, maybe for xmas presents.) Can't beat the price. the display is an unsolved problem, and the funny HDMI connectors do not help. Having lived through the 70s and 80s with the wedge machines, I have mixed feelings about these being the first machine for a lot of people. I hope this model 400 gets some creative applications! Mostly I use RPis as headless hosts for several sorts of embedded things, that do not need keyboard, mouse, or display to operate. This form factor opens up some possibilities that I never considered. I'll use my favorite keyboard (Microsoft Natural) for my epic compositions.

Yes the pinebook is a disappointment, in many ways.įor my use, the keyboard looks too small and squishy. My hexacore ARM with NVMe is quite snappy and completely serviceable for desktop replacement. But it seems really fast to me, because I started doing this on the RPi 2. If you haven't used RPis like this before, I can see why it seems sluggish to start apps.
